Broadband project gets the green light
Warwickshire County Council has been given the go ahead to start the procurement of a superfast wholesale broadband network to cover Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire.
The £8 million project will proceed after Government unit Broadband Delivery UK rubber stamped the bid to improve the area's broadband infrastructure.
For the past few months the CSW Broadband project has been engaging with individuals, businesses and communities to understand what broadband speeds are actually being achieved and what is preventing better broadband speeds across the sub-region.
This work will continue and become even more important now as the search intensifies to find a supplier to the project. At the first stage the project team will carry out an open market review, which means engaging with existing broadband providers to hear their future business development plans.
Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council's Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Communities, said: "This is a major milestone. We have been waiting for the green light to proceed and now the project becomes very real.
"We now need to hear from all broadband or internet service providers in the area to gain an understanding of what their future development plans are. All information will obviously be given in strict commercial confidence. This information will enable us to refine our data before going out to public consultation in a few weeks' time."
