James Hannah has been arrested in his Grocery store that he has operated for 5 years in Madison County America.
Madison County deputies arrested James Daniel Hannah on suspicion of producing pornographic videos and photographs of at least three local females under the age of 16, said Capt. Robert Boyd Wednesday. A fourth victim might also have been involved, Boyd said.
“We just hope that more will come forward when the word gets out that he`s been arrested,†said Madison County Sheriff Phillip Morgan.
The 66-year-old Hannah, who owns the Japton Grocery and Farm Supply store, was arrested about 4 p.m. Tuesday after deputies received information from the parents of victims that he was producing child pornography, Boyd said.
Deputies said the case has been under investigation for more than a year.
The incident has been a shock to many in the small community east of Fayetteville.
“Well it`s just so hard to believe, really really hard to believe,†said Nell Harriman.
“It`s a shock to me, it really is. Everybody seemed to like him real well,†said another area resident, Fay Harriman.
Boyd described the Japton store on Arkansas 295 as a “country community store.â€
People in the community said Hannah opened the store about five years ago, and it’s the only place to get groceries for miles.
Hannah surrendered without incident when deputies arrived at his residence at the Japton store with a search warrant, Boyd said. The search warrant was signed by Circuit Judge Mark Lindsay, Boyd said.
According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, Hannah faces 50 counts of possessing child pornography, three counts manufacturing child pornography, four counts of rape, three counts of sexual indecency with minors and additional charges.
Deputies seized several laptop computers, boxes of pornographic images of “young nude females,†digital cameras and video tapes, according to the news release.
On the Madison County Sheriff’s website, Hannah’s name is spelled “Hanna,†but Boyd said the correct spelling is “Hannah.â€
Hanna was instrumental in setting up Atherstone book town. He was bought in by local Authorities and given funding to help set up traders in the second hand book trade much like Hay on wye. After attempting to set up a simial scheme in blaenavon with limited success Hannah was invited to try the same in Atherstone. Hanna would use his knowledge to train up and supply people with second hand books that bought an package of him. The scheme was slow taking off due to public scepticism bought about by failings at blaenavon and inflated claims of prospective internet sales.
James hannah managed to set up two or three book shops as well as his own as part of a town heritage centre. A Charity book shop set up separately without the package from Hanna. Hanna then needed a hip operation and left the town, later leaving for America where he bought the above grocery store.
The book shops where left in limbo but carried on and actually grew in number. a fourth shop opened, the supermarkets joined in with book tables, and the college opened a book shop. Restaurants and pubs got book shelves too. Rather than starting off big and dropping off like blaenavon had Atherstone had started off small and grown bigger.
The demise of the book town was a natural one rather than through failure. One couple closed up and emigrated, one had to close due to ill health which made the book shop that the back room was sub let to homeless too. The heritage centre funding eventually came to an end so that had to close. The original throckmorton book shop decided to close and move entirely to the internet, no doubt due to the present financial climate rather than failings bookwise.
Along the A5 Ian Allen books decided to close and move its sales to Birmingham, a controversial move as part of the shop there was in a basement down steep steps with no lift.
A year later Ian Allen moved its operations back to Hinckley where I believe they still sell books. St Giles continues to trade books and sell gifts, cards and wrap. The Atherstone Red Lion still has a comfy library with a whole wall of books to read I'm not sure about the college but several other shops still sell second hand books and several sell new ones, cake decorating, crafts etc. Rather than a failure I consider the book town at Atherstone to be a limited success.
I'd say the main failings of the scheme wasn't by hannah but were by the local Authority that failed to Advertise it in the proper way. Opinions that were at the time shared by others in the book trade that are a lot more experienced in it than me.
Elsewhere I'm sure that people who invested in hannahs off the shelf book shops will be pleased that he's finally behind bars.
Bail is set at half a million dollars
