Firefighters tackle factory blaze
60 Firefighters have spent the night tackling a warehouse blaze at Jacksons of Old Arley, Unit 2 on the Arley Industrial Estate.
Warwickshire County Council's Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the incident at 3:50am this morning. On arrival crews were faced with a well established fire at a unit storing camping and caravan equipment. At its peak over 60 firefighters and 12 appliances were in attendance trying to get the fire under control.
The crews did manage to stop the fire from spreading to a nearby unit storing gas cylinders and a two story building used as offices for the company, using hoses and a hydraulic platform. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the contents of the building, the area storing the camping equipment was completely destroyed.
Station Manager, Ken Probin said:
"Firefighters have worked tirelessly throughout the morning to tackle the fire. Unfortunately due to the nature of the materials stored in the unit, the fire spread very rapidly and we were unable to save the building. Our main priority at the incident was to stop the fire from spreading to a nearby LPG cylinder storage unit, which if affected could have increased the danger of the incident.
"A cordon was put in place and residents were evacuated in homes from Spinney Close until it was safe to return."
Steve Maxey, Assistant Chief Executive and Solicitor to the Council at North Warwickshire Borough Council said:
"Building Control and Environmental Health Officers from the Borough Council have attended the scene throughout the morning and will continue to work with the Fire & Rescue Service to monitor and ensure the safety of both the site itself and for public health. Water supplies were initially disrupted in parts of Old Arley to assist the fire fighting effort. Severn Trent Water have re-established supplies, although there may be some temporary reduction to water pressure. Gas and electricity supplies to residential properties are not affected."
The fire is now under control and crews are damping down at the site and making the building safe. Two local schools Gunhill Infant School and Herbert Fowler Junior School have been affected by the incident due to the main water supply being diverted to assistant with the fire.
The Fire Emergency Support Service also attended the incident to assist the owners of the company, whilst the fire was brought under control.
Police are treating the fire as arson and are appealing for any witnesses who saw any activity around the industrial estate between 8pm on Thursday 13 May and 3.30am on Friday 14 May when the fire had taken hold.
