18 May 2006 Atherstone herald "A Police hunt has been launched following a spate of attacks in Atherstone which are believed to be linked. Three 'serious assaults' all took place between March and April in the alleyway linking Long Street and Tannery Close. All involved youths who assaulted and robbed their victims. The first incident was at approximately 7pm on Tuesday, March 28, when a 43-year-old man was approached by a youth asking the time who demanded the man's watch, bracelet, coat and wallet. When the victim refused, he was punched and kicked to the ground " www.tamworthherald.co.uksite search keywords - A Police hunt has been launched following a spate of attacks in Atherstone which are believed to be linked I seriously believe that the Aldi plans are creating a muggers alley in Atherstone, and I can't believe that any councillor would support the plans, but councillors such as Derek Pickard have openly supported plans from Aldi from the outset, "I am very happy about Aldi, always liked tha plans and the prospects but did not specify anything beyond that". That means he also must like the potential muggers alley that has been built in to the site, in order to satisfy the planning condition of access of long street, as he didn't specify that better safer access should be designed in to the plans. As yet there are no security camera on the alley which has a completely blind section in the middle. Although it will be lit when the store is open.

I think the alley will be dangerous, and I find it hard to understand why Aldi would put there customers in danger. Imagine going up there on a dark winters evening with all the chavs hanging around. Is it going to have cameras in it, connected to the towns cctv?

The car park is finished, so is the landsacping, and they were putting the car park lights up today, the signage is yet to go up. The freezers and chillers are in but the shelves aren't. The area looks tidy especially on the corner, but it's just 'better than it was' which is atherstone's favourite saying. not the best, just 'better than it was'

Is it going to have cameras in it, connected to the towns cctv? NO, it's got one camera covering the emergency exit on the long street end of the entrance side. It just looks like a fixed camera and doesn't cover the rear of the building. They do appear to be having signage to shine into the windows of the flats that briefly had a rear view. shame I couldn't have took some pics from that view. I'm quite concerned for the tenants in those flats. They've gone from having a private yard to having their front doors right on a public pavement.
