Greggs have resorted to giving their cakes, pasties and batches away in an attempt to pull customers away from the established Quality cake shop next door, Masters. Staff were asking 'Have you ever been to a greggs before' with a manic grin, and thrusting bags full of shop produce in to passers by hands. Masters meanwhile, continued to sell their stock and chat normally to their loyal and happy customers.

Why is that derek? Why will you use Aldi but not greggs, Why are you pleased Aldi have opened but not Greggs? Two national companies, both are competition for local shops in the town, both are competition for masters, so what is the difference.

We did something on those kind of tactics in business studies at college. Sounds like a good business plan to me. For gregs anyway and providing people like the things there giving them. Highly doubt i will be using any of them anyway. Not a customer in the local bakery shop market myself.
I would have thought Greggs customers are not necesarily the same people as the other bakers. Arguably they appeal to a different market, even if the products are very similar. Eg the coop doesnt seem any quieter when i'm in there (although we don't know if there spendng any less) and Aldi is always fairly busy too when I go there. Also on the other forum it is mentioned that greggs was very busy. you say that Masters was the same as usual by the look of it so maybe that gives some credibility to this.
At the end of the day they have just as much right to set up a business here as Masters did when they came onto the scene. It is a bit of an odd choice of location though I have to say.

They do and I welcome the choice. So far I've stuck to masters for my pineapple creams and sausage roll, but the pretty girl who serves me may have a bit to do with that TBH I'm disappointed with Gregg's, I thought it was going to have a restaurant bit at the back but nooo.

Your are optimitic. This is Atherstone after all. You leave that pretty girl alone she's mine . ;D
I think a lot of the hype has gone now tht Greggs have been open a few weeks. I suspect that Masters have gotten some of their trade back.

lol I haven't either. But then I'm trying to keep away from cake shops so I haven't been to masters either. Not that it's working, I just eat biscuits instead
