More road works on the A5 and more diversions as the 'gap' is closed off to traffic crossing the A5 and to right turners. Work will involve installing a squashed roundabout along the same piece of road as the existing junction rather than fitting a new full size round junction as was first proposed opposite Weddington Lane.
TRAFFIC chaos is around the corner as a major stretch of road running through Nuneaton onto the A5 will be closed for four months.
Starting on Sunday night and running for 20 weeks, motorists will have no right turn manoeuvres on the A5 /A444 Redgate junction from both the A5 and the A444 Weddington Road.
Traffic on the A5 Northbound and Weddington Lane wishing to turn right at the Redgate junction will be diverted northbound to Mancetter Roundabout and back onto the A5 Southbound carriageway.
Those travelling the A5 southbound and Atherstone Road who want to turn right will be diverted southbound to Higham Roundabout and back onto the northbound carriageway.
The picture could have been a lot worse as it was originally planned to make a full road closure along the Weddington Road.
Intervention from Warwickshire County councillor Keith Kondakor forced the re-think, although he admits that the situation is still not ideal for motorists.
A spokesperson for the Highways Agency apologised for any delays.
"Throughout the delivery of this project, contractors Galliford Try will endeavour to maintain access for both pedestrians and vehicles at all times wherever possible," the spokesperson said.
"Some delays will be inevitable, every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.
"Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and its contractors wish to thank motorists for their ongoing co-operation and patience throughout these essential improvement works."
The works to improve the A5 Redgate junction is just one phase of a multi-million pound project being undertaken on the A5.
These works include junction improvements, plus a length of dual carriageway and a roundabout at the MIRA Technology Park site frontage, which will help to improve traffic flow at this location.
There will also be much-needed improvements made at the Wood Lane junction and Higham roundabout.
The government has funded this work, through its Regional Growth Fund (RGF) to help stimulate economic growth.
Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council has been described as the promoters of the Regional Growth Fund bid, and it is understood that once completed, the works will pave the way for the trunk road capacity to be increased.
Project leaders say this will have a two-fold beneficial impact as it will release development in the local area and encourage economic growth.
