I'm starting a new thread on this,
www.atherstone.org.uk/officials-consider-sell-off-of-atherstone-sites.html
It's quite unbelievable that such a big development can suddenly appear for a site that has repeated planning applications turned down by the very council who now wants to build on it.
NWBC existing offices were only built in the 80s ? A modern brick and tile wall, flat roof, 3 story high L shaped office block. Obviously now too small and has been for some years, the acquisition and use of old bank house tells us this.
But were will the money come from, will the old offices be sold to help fund the new offices, and if so who would want them? Most likely candidate there would be TNT who had the councils old offices in long street. Will money come from central Government, will it come from taxpayers money locally.
The Phoenix yard site was listed as a prime development site to further the regeneration of Atherstones town centre in a study some years ago. The study was for the regeneration of the town centre that was carried out ten years ago. The site would be ideal to create a back lane shopping area through the arch way in church street going towards the swimming baths. So far no one has taken this idea any further.
The site has had many planning application made for it, housing and flats mainly, new and use of existing buildings on the site which are listed, in the conservation are and in the town centre.
Will These offices be built around the building that planning were trying to protect, will they be council offices, shops, flats?
Will access be improved to the site by the combining of the memorial hall and library at the site into a new building as is proposed?. will a road be built to connect Sheepy road and rear access for businesses thus allowing pedestrianisation of higher long street
I cant understand why the existing building hasn't been extended on the car park and land purchased on the other side of Woolpack way, where the empty flats have stood for three years and previously an empty plot for 15, for car parking, The garage site is more town centre than Phoenix yard and would be more suited to a council office extension.
