Local politicians have backed angry residents opposed to the proposed green energy site at Baxterley.
Members of North Warwickshire Borough Council's planning committee met on Monday night and added their objection to the scheme which could provide enough green energy to power up to 4,500 homes if given the go-ahead.
"This clearly reflects the views of the vast majority of local people who have had the opportunity to view the real facts," said Chris Brett, a member of the Baxterley Action Committee which is concerned about the impact on the area and the lives and health of the people living there.
"This is seen as a good decision which gives local residents hope that their communities and
countryside will be protected," Mr Brett added.
Baxterley Parish Council have so far received 101 letters from local people and residents at the nearby Bentley Home and added their objection to the proposal.
Atherstone Civic Society also strongly oppose the development including among their objections the following:
l That the area is not a brownfield site as the land has not been used to deposit shale for nearly 30 years.
l The site is in open countryside, located on clearly visible high ground and has become grown over with trees and shrubs.
l Shale extraction will produce a low quality material and will generate around 240 lorry movements every day for over a year.
l North Warwickshire has already exceeded its Structure Plan allocation of employment land.
l The area is a Regionally Important Geological Site and close to the ancient Baddesley Common, a potential site of Important Nature Conservation.
l The site is close to Merevale Park and Hall, Merevale Church, Abbey Farm and the Abbey ruins, all of which are listed buildings.
The final decision for the construction of a 'sustainable resource recovery park' at the 10-acre old Baddesley pit site will be with Warwickshire County Council.
