GUN TERROR AT THE TILL
NICKI ROBINSON
10:30 - 24 May 2007
"Empty all your money into this bag or I'll blow your head off."
This was the chilling message from a masked gunman who burst into an Atherstone newsagents last week.
Staff at town centre store U & M Gale were subjected to a terrifying ordeal when the man stormed into the Long Street shop demanding money from the till.
"The man burst into the shop saying 'empty all your money into this bag or I'll blow your f***ing head off," owner John Jennings told the Herald.
"It was almost as if it was a film. I just sort of froze.
"I opened the till and he was holding a white carrier bag. With his other hand he reached out and grabbed the money.
"Then he said again, if I called the police he would blow my head off.
"It's not something you would expect at that time of the morning, especially in Atherstone.
"I'm still a little bit shocked."
The incident happened in the early hours of last Wednesday morning (May 16).
The man, who was brandishing a black handgun and whose face was hidden beneath a balaclava, ran into the store at around 6.20am.
He is described as tall and thin. He wore a grey hooded top or sweatshirt and dark coloured sweat pants and had gloves on.
Staff say he ran out of the shop, up Long Street, towards the railway station.
He had the contents of the till stuffed into a white carrier bag.
Detectives in Atherstone are investigating and appealing for witnesses.
Anyone with information is asked to call DC Craig Proctor on 01827 718092 or Crimestoppers, in complete confidence, on 0800 555111.
