This is what i was waiting for, Atherstone councillors yo jump on the band wagon along with most other UK town to start procedures to enforce an on street alcohol ban.
The Atherstone recorder reported....
With the increase of hard pressed smokers having to smoke outside public houses, town councillors have called for more control over seating provided outside pubs on the pavement.

Councillors may not have the guts to say what they mean but that's what they really mean, an on street alcohol ban.Atherstone has bucked the trend of other towns and has actively encouraged street drinking with events in the Market Square which has five alcohol outlets and the Market Square being licensed for alcohol sales consumption, even a beer festival, but now the very people that have been involved with those events seem to want to curb on street smoking by people consuming alcohol. Atherstone has proved that on street drinking does not necessarily lead to more violence, and probably leads to a more relaxed social steady drinking style rather than binge drinking.
Nearly all the pubs in Atherstone now have on street drinking, some of which used to or still has a rear garden or court yard, including The Atherstone Red Lion Hotel and The Black Horse.
With the exception of the Black horse there is no significant footpath obstruction.
I believe Atherstone is now at risk of losing something that has added to the charm and character of this town, a charm and character that has been 15 years in the making and that has developed despite the town centre not been vehicle free.
If councillors really want to do something about obstruction they should do something about the parking, pedestrianise the town centre 10 till 4, make sure a service road for the shops is built in to the phoenix development.
I'd urge councillors to think very carefully about the route they take with this.
I'd also encourage publicans and customers to give their point of view.
