North Warwickshire Borough Council have begun negations with Atherstone town council about possibility's of taking over Atherstone Market and revitalising it following a decision by Hughmark, who have run the Tuesday and Friday market since 2004 to end the contract in three months time.
" Atherstone Town Council has for some time expressed an interest in running the Market and the Market Square and we have been meeting the with them to discuss a way forward," a borough councillor spokeswoman told Tamworth Herald reporter Tracy Robbins.
She confirmed that some long-standing traders have offered to run the market on a co-operative basis, until its future is secured.
I'd love to know where the town council is going to get all the money for the market and Christmas lights maintenance AND errection and dismantling AND storage.
If my memory serves me correctly have the Borough council not just disposed of the old market stalls, which lasted less than 10 yrs, due to hughmark having their own stalls.
Where are the replacement stalls going to come from when hughmark takes its stalls with them?
Where are they going to be stored?
Taking over 'The market Square' concerns me. I assume they just mean taking over the letting out of it and using it for markets, events etc. The Market Square is a large area that has services, mains electricity, water, street lighting power outlets for the Market. All need maintenance, testing, bills paying etc It also has parking bays, owned an operated by NWBC.
Anyway what makes Atherstone Town Council think they're going to do any better with a ailing market than North Warwickshire Borough Council or a private company. What else can be done to it.
