Thanks to Atherstone Town Council the town now has shiney new gateway signs to the town. The signs will be fitted with troughs and planted up as part of Atherstone town councils town centre flower display. Should the council be spending money on flower displays though? would it be better spent elsewhere? should they have had proper gateways with a sign each side of the road? Should the signs say market town or should they have said booktown?

I think the flowers look nice, especially in summer, it would be a shame to not have them. It would look good if you had a sign and flowers each side, if only on the Long Street and Witherley Road entrances.

Nice signs, well done atc. The writing under the canal one looks odd though. why is it not on two lines like all of the others. If they'd left a bigger gap between the writing and the pictures booktown could have been added in. A market town is nothing special now is it?
edit If you want people to come here then it's got to look presentable, and flowers are one of the cheapest ways of doing that, just ask that american house doctor woman if you don't believe me.

I asked about the canal one and apparently it was very difficult to get it to look right, personally I agree, with you that it would have looked better with 1771 underneath canals.

I always liked 'historic hatting town' but I suppose hatting fits into the wider category of 'market town'.
Maybe they could have fitted 'booktown' as one of the pictures below the text. I think booktown has a lot more to do with Atherstone being a market town than the 'War of the Roses'.

I'd have used a view down the canal, A bridge with water and a canal boat coming towards us. that would have made room for a book one to the right. I can see the point thatif the bookshops close, but it doesn't show much optimism in the project by the town council. Atherstone still doesn't have any signs saying its anything for people to visit. Why is the town council emblem on the signs, when did Atherstone vote on and adopt that as its town emblem?
