Battling pensioners are seeking legal action on travel tokens that North Warwickshire Borough Council are replacing with a bus pass scheme that is used elsewhere in the county.
Pensioners say that many people do not have access to buses and the £25 pounds worth of tokens accepted by taxis are vital for their freedom
NWBC Have been told at a recent meeting that new national bus passes come into effect next April for over 60's and disabled people.
Councillors were told that the value of the Borough's travel tokens had not risen with inflation.
They were also informed that there are community travel schemes in the borough and the county, which are addressing the issues of vulnerable people.
They have agreed to consider issuing 'companion passes' as a local enhancement to the scheme, and have also promised there will be a commitment to invest funding in community transport provision.
A proposed scheme will be discussed by the resources board in November to ensure anyone 'greatly disadvantaged' by the loss of travel tokens will be better off by having greater access to improved community transport.
My nan has these travel tokens and I'm not sure if she still can but i know for a fact that she used to buy her oap rail card with them. I also know that she's took her daughter places with her in a taxi. She can't take someone on a bus using her bus pas like that can she. She can't get a bus from Queens road to Station street or even from the co-op to Queens Road if it starts lashing it down with rain. What's she supposed to do, get wet ? Perhaps the proposed scheme will provide a taxi bus for her .
Councillors you are WRONG, you are telling pensioners what YOU think is better for them, you haven't even considered asking the pensioners. You haven't even waited for the results of the parish plan. You should be ashamed of what you've done.
