It's been chaos on the roads, I was supposed to go to burnley today. All was well apart from high winds about Sandbach until I got to Thelwall, the flyover was closed (3+ trucks went over), but as I was going M56 to Manchester I thought that wouldn't affect me. Wrong, this led to an increase along the the M56, and as the M60 was/is closed South west corner by Bredbury (trucks over), all traffic was going up past Trafford park over the Barton flyover which was closed to trucks. By the time I got there it was/is closed to everything(I assume a foreign truck ignored the signs and went over), I dumped the parcel at Trafford park after queuing for an hour and headed back. Down to the M56. queued another half hour to get on to the A56 to go south eventually giving up and driving on to the M6 to do a loop on the A50 junction and go south. That was a mistake as the M56 closed by Warrington west bound (another truck) and with the M6 north closed and no south exit on to the M6 unless you go up to the A50 and turn round there was no where to go. I queued there for 4 hours. So that was effectively a great north/south barrier with only the tunnels, Warrington swing bridge and Barton swing bridge left open, I believe Runcorn bridge closed and at times was open to cars only one lane each way at times. Also up north, the M6 was closed by the M56 causing traffic to travel towards Blackpool, The m65 was closed, as was the M62 across the Penines (2 trucks over). Heard the prom in Blackpool was closed on radio 2. Loads of trees over, I saw a woman being chased by an empty road salt bin, eventually attacking her, looked funny.
I got to Tamworth and queued another hour and half at the M42 roundabout to go straight on down the A5 .not sure why it was busy, motorway didn't look blocked and only reason I had to que was traffic turning right was in the left lane blocking straight on A5 traffic. All in all the worst day in Britain I've ever seen and certainly in ten years of professional driving. Police put a 20 mph speed restriction on all Manchester motorways and highway agency begged drivers not to go out and to park up unless necessary, esp trucks, caravans and bikes but it seemed to get ignored

High winds batter Warwickshire Environment news Published: Wednesday 17th January 2007
High winds gusting at more than 70mph have battered Warwickshire over the past few days causing damage to property and leaving one person hospitalised.
A number of trees have been blown onto roads and buildings, and incidents have included an injury in North Warwickshire at No Mans Heath when a car ran into a tree which had fallen from private land onto the road, and the closure of a road at Edge Hill after a tree fell in south Warwickshire.
In many cases the condition, and therefore the potential hazard posed by these trees, could have been identified had the tree owners carried out a visual assessment.
With the likelihood of further winter and spring gales imminent, landowners that have trees on their boundaries that are adjacent to roads or buildings are urged to inspect their condition.
This is increasingly important after a gale or when the ground is waterlogged.
Further advice can be sought Warwickshire County Council, Forestry Services, 01926 736491
