I'm confused . Others are confused, and I could see why, I'd looked at the Quarryman's site early on in the Arden Heritage trails development. I'd commented to Sarah Burley about how basic and infantile it came across and how confusing it was with where the trail started and ended. It seemed to bare no resemblance to what Sarah and her team were explaining to me as we walked the south east corner of the Arden Heritage trail to Hartshill Hayes. Winding our way along Apple pie lane we passed gates labelled Quarryman's Walk, yet according to the web site it doesn't go there.
Now I've realised why.
Or I thought I did.
Maybe not.
The original Quarrymans Walk was to be from Hartshill Maintenance yard, Bridge 32, all the way along the canal to Tuttle hill, it was to have interpretation boards, and sculptures along its length to rival the Coventry Sculpture trail. It even got it's start sculpture; A granite stone Plaque of a quarryman dropping down on a rope chiselling the rock face with a pick.
A sculpture that Sarah and her team told me has nothing to do with the Quarrymans Walk.
So what I'd like to know is how did a fantastically well planned sculpture trail along a canal end up as a meander across fields to Caldecote which as far as I can see has nothing to do with quarries or Hartshill, the Canal or Railways.
Part one of the project did get built; the sculpture, The interpretation boards, the start markers. The second part the artwork; Benches, way markers & intermediate interpretation boards never got finished, so there wasn't a lot at the Tuttle hill end.
Then some bright spark decided they wanted it to start and end at Hartshill Hayes, Which is great, but why could it not have continued along the canal towpath all the way to Tuttle Hill up the hill down Camphill Road, past Stubbs Pool back up Hollystitches road (to avoid the landfill) and across to the country park and continue.
Country park, of course that's why the route was forced across here, Forced into a circular route, forced to connect two country parks, rather than take a quarryman's walk past the actual quarries.
The website was set up for the ORIGINAL quarryman's walk, 'The Quarryman's way' between that being set up it got changed and became the present one 'The Quarryman's Walk, part of The North Arden Heritage Trail. Or is it?? It Got a Parish Sculpture, each parish gets a sculpture; Hartshill's main sculpture is on Grange Road with an interpretation Board.
This was why I suggested interpretation boards for Atherstone and Baddesley, I though we were getting the same, but no.
This was a project between British Waterways and Groundwork. Strangely though The North Arden Heritage Trail does get a mention on the leaflets.
If I find out why the Canal sculpture trail was scrapped I'll let you know, until then though we'll all be confused.
