The Highways Agency(I assume), Not happy with a new crossing on Atherstone's Witherley road they also decided to add a new speed limit. A speed limit that Started at the A5 which also received a 50 limit instead of 60 earlier in the year.
The latest is addition is 8 northbound speed bumps and 7 southbound speed bump with a central refuge island in the junction of Mancetter Road which is to realigned with Witherley Road.
I'm not sure what the aim of this is or how it makes sense. The highways agency seems to be of the mentality that the way to solve all our accident problems is to reduce speed. At this rate we'll be walking faster than the cars so they'll have no change of hitting us.
The speed bumps, despite being dangerous as they've only a small white triangle on to identify them and an unlit triangular road sign, have effectively halved the speed limit on Witherley road, increased pollution and I imagine increased noise and banging for local residents.
For a trip to Lutterworth or tamworth all of these speed reductions add a significant amount of time to the journey. The limit is now 30 from North street, effectiely 20 all the way to the A5, from there to Witherley it's 40 previously 60, to higham roudabout it is 50 previously 60, through the traffic lights at Hinckley it is 40 previously 50., paynes to Lime Kilns 50 previously 60 from the Lime kilns to M69 is 40 previously 60. This last section is quite an amazing waste of taxpayers money. Quite how The Highways Agency can justify spending what is obviously a huge amount of cash on a road that was previosly 60 is a mystery. Aswell as the speed drop, two unused speed camera bays have been added, they're unused as the van would rather park illegally on a farm field entrance, footways to both sides of the road, cycleway to one central hatchings with central refuges and lights. flashing speed and zig zig road warnings. Removal of layby. Traffic lights to M69 Baskerville roundabout. Roundabout added at Nuts lane, roundabout added at Logix park. Plus further roundabout improvements about to start as soon as it gets busy at Hinckley roundabout.
All this and Redgate junction goes relatively ignored. Fenny drayton turn gets more attention than red gate .
It's all very strange and illogical to me. The safe roads get a great deal spent on them and are slowed to a crawl, the dangerous ones are ignored and then they go over the top.
The strange thing is that now the crossing is there the problem is solved, yet just up the road the problem exists, not just in the mornings and evenings but all day. several times a day the public pavement is thronged with school pupils to the point of forcing the general public onto the road in Queens Road. The cross North Street on the Junction of Queens Road and both myself and my brother have had several near misses with pupils waling out straight in front of vehicles once we've already started pulling off from the junction. There's no flashing lights at all to say its a crossing to cars coming around the corner from Long Street, or up Queens Road. There's no markings to keep the as far away from the junction as possible on the pavements.
Surely at the very least a zebra crossing is needed and proper footpath markings.
Surely at the very least some logic is needed to put safety measures where they are needed instead of where they aren't.
