At mid day on Wednesday June the 23rd there was an accident on Carlyon Road that closed it off for over 12 hours whilst four 1000 litre containers were removed and the 1000 litres of emulsion that spilled onto the road was cleaned up.
A lorry going delivering to 3M came off Atherstone Bypass and turned around the sharp corner into Carlyon Road. This caused the poorly secured pallets that the containers were on to slide over the side and burst through the side curtain, hitting the road and rupturing.
Cars driving through the leaking Diamite salt water solution and white emulsion made the clean up operation more difficult County Council staff said, as it spread it a considerable distance into Carlyon Road.
Four fire engines, a fire truck and a fire car attended the scene and holding area was later set up at the Bull Public House Car Park.
One container was up righted before fire crews attended, fire crew put on breathing apparatus to right the leaking emulsion container and seal the other two containers before county Council arranged for Veolia from Hinckley to remove them. However this took until about 8 pm by which time the emulsion had set and therefore required specialist removal equipment so the 'the beast' a high power aqua surfacing road sweeper was called in from Burntwood. The machine with a minimum call out fee of £5000 cleans the road with a oscillating jet wash and cleaner attachment on the front and is used to remove white lines on motorways. A high power jet wash truck also joined in the operation which took until after midnight.
