Funding will help community groups improve access, transport and communication.
North Warwickshire LEADS the way with European Funding
Just over £1 million funded through the European Union and Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) is set to come into North Warwickshire to benefit its rural communities through the North Warwickshire LEADER Programme. The LEADER approach was developed in Europe and there are already examples of successful projects in other parts of the rural West Midlands.
The Borough Council has supported the development of the LEADER Programme and submitted the successful bid for funding, Colin Hayfield, Leader of North Warwickshire Borough Council and Local Action Group (LAG) member said:
"This is a real opportunity that we must grasp to work closely with our small settlements and villages and target ways to help them prosper. The Borough Council is committed to working with partners to make the LEADER Programme a success in North Warwickshire."
The North Warwickshire LEADER Programme has set targets to achieve improved access to services, better transport and communications, sustaining the rural heritage and support for business networks. It is designed to encourage local communities to work with large and small groups, businesses and service providers and our Regional Development Agency, -Advantage West Midlands. Together they will become part of the North Warwickshire Local Action Group (LAG) and will help to develop and deliver projects.
Warwickshire CAVA ( Community and Voluntary Action ) will be playing an important part by employing one of the project workers, who will work in local rural communities to help develop ideas and proposals for projects, alongside a worker employed by the Borough Council. Their role will include providing advice to project applicants and ensuring that projects meet the requirements of the funding agencies.
Peter Farrugia, local businessman and Chair of the Local Action Group said:
"We are about to recruit two members of staff to help us deliver LEADER and the job adverts should now be on local websites. We already have a number of project ideas in the pipeline and will shortly be asking applicants to come forward with formal 'Expressions of Interest' outlining what they want to achieve. We are looking for projects that will make a real difference to the people and places of rural North Warwickshire".
