Culprits caught and fined for dumping tyres in North Warwickshire
Flytippers prosecuted for dumping tyres
Flytippers are counting the cost after the Borough Council successfully prosecuted them for dumping tyres in the North Warwickshire countryside.
Kevin Bramwell of Cannock and David Hipkiss and Tony Wall of Norton Canes pleaded guilty at Nuneaton Magistrates Court to unloading tyres in a lay-by on the B4116 between Atherstone and Furnace End.
An off duty policeman, PC Bull, had spotted the flat-bed HGV belonging to Bramwell and observed two men throwing tyres from the vehicle onto the ground. PC Bull reported the incident to his force control room and then followed the vehicle through Bentley, Baxterley and onto the A5. When the vehicle, driven by Bramwell, went through the red lights at Birch Coppice, PC Bull lost track of the flytippers.
They were later spotted on the outskirts of Lichfield by other members of the Police who had been alerted to the vehicle registration number. When questioned, Bramwell said that he had unloaded the tyres as he thought they were unsafe on the van and intended to collect them later.
Hipkiss and Wall were each fined £412.56 with the Court taking account of their early guilty plea and their limited finances. Bramwell, as driver of the vehicle, was fined £512.56 and he confirmed that he had returned to collect the tyres and disposed of them lawfully.
Commenting on the case, Steve Maxey, Assistant Chief Executive and Solicitor to the Council said:
" It takes a lot of resources for the Borough Council to clear up and investigate this kind of problem. It actually costs the Council Tax payers of North Warwickshire around £600,000 a year for us to clear flytipped rubbish and litter. Fly-tipping is anti-social behaviour which we treat very seriously. "
