I notice that the Christmas lights are already off in Atherstones main street. No matter if you celebrate 12th night tonight, 5th or tomorrow, 6th, its still before the 12th night which is bad luck. 12th night is one of the main nights of the festivities, many drink, party, sing and open a last present as they take down the decorations or turn the lights off for the last time. Poor show when council tax has payed for them to go up. As pitiful and cold as they are.
However, which is 12th night? There's much debate over whether the 5th or 6th is 12th night after Christmas night. This comes about because traditionally days weren't started and finished at 12 midnight. A day started at 6 and finish 24 hours later at 6. Therefore the evening of a day came before the the night and finished with daylight. This is why Christmas eve(ning) is the evening before Christmas day(time) Christmas day started in the evening with celebrations and festivities, then folks went to bed and got up Christmas day. Christmas day finished at 6. Then boxing day evening started which is 1st night. This means 12th night is now on th 5th.
I celebrate the 6th as 12th night My days end at midnight so I follow the present calendar which makes 12th night on the 6th January.
