Improvements to Atherstone Railway Station are nearing completion, with just surfacing and landscaping left to be done.
The old foot bridge has been cut up and removed. The work was carried out and night and chiselling could be heard all over the town.
Railtrack are using the cattle creep under the railway on the old Watling Street as an alternative way to access the platforms.
The old platform one with the station building on it is now platform two, and the old platform two becomes platform one.
A retaining wall has been built along watling street the out of town side of the cattle creep to support a new access road to land at the back of the far platform (1) This gives access to a kiss and drop area around a roundabout. and what appears to be limited parking, I'm not sure if this will be long stay or drop off only . new footway along the road to provide step free access.
Steps next to the bridge .
This supplements past improvements , new station shelters with benches, new lighting platform lighting, new car park lighting, digital sign boards, station announcement system, ticket machines, new platform surface and tactile paving strip, new time table boards and information boards, cctv cameras and last but not least main line services to Liverpool and London.
with a 400% increase in passenger numbers, one of the greatest increases on the network, great things are once again expected of Atherstone Station. Lets hope that this time their expectations are met.
Have you got any thoughts on the improvements ?
