ANXIOUS council officials have pressed the government to clarify plans for the proposed HS2 railway link which is set to pass through an area covered by the authority.
Political leaders and the chief executive of North Warwickshire Council, which covers Coleshill and Water Orton, have penned a letter to transport secretary Justine Greening. They are demanding answers about the possible site of a major junction on the new £33 billion high-speed line, which could eventually take trains to the north of England.
Concerns were raised following a meeting of the HS2 Community Forum for the Coleshill when rail link officials indicated that the junction to take the route from London and the West Midlands to Leeds may be sited in the town.
In the letter, council leader Mick Stanley, opposition chief Colin Hayfield and chief executive Jerry Hutchinson called for confirmation of the route of the second phase of the project that could involve an extra 15km of track running through the area covered by the authority.
The letter read: “This lack of clarity will have a devastating effect on the eastern and northern parts of the borough, just at a time when potential development sites which could lead to major investment in the region, are being brought forward.”
The transport secretary was asked to give an early indication of the junction site before a decision on whether to proceed with the initial scheme is announced later this year.

The route mentioned is the spur that will come off just before Birmingham to take HS2 to Manchester and Leeds. The proposed route appears to come off the line at Coleshill and follow the M42 through Kingsbury Water Park and between the M42 and Polesworth, then continue on towards Burton Upon trent. The exact route has never been confirmed.
