North Warwickshire’s Pooley Country Park is 10 years old this year, and Warwickshire County Council is celebrating the landmark with a special anniversary weekend at the Polesworth beauty spot.
From 11am to 4pm this Sunday (September 23) the park is hosting a family day which includes the 'Pooley Olympics' organised by rangers, refreshments from the Country Park tea room, and a special BBQ organised by the Samuel Barlow pub. In addition there will be a special celebratory cake, which will be cut by Councillor Tilly May at 2.30pm.
During the day there will be plenty to see and do including a 'look and see' showcase by Polesworth Scouts, whose new centre will soon be housed at Pooley Country Park. In addition there will be a whole host of activities for the children and craft activities to take part in, face painting, birds of prey and the chance to meet Ranger Ted.
As part of the celebrations, the park's resident artists will be present, along with the Amington Brass Band who will performing under the shelter of the motorway bridge.
Paula Cheesman, Country Parks Manager, said: "Our parks provide a vital link for local communities, with opportunities for exercise and green space. We hope that everyone will come along and support their park, and enjoy this great family day out."
To kick off the celebrations on Friday (September 21), local schools have been invited to work with parks staff, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and Place Prospectors, a community interest company who have been working with Warwickshire County Council on an arts-based project.
The theme of the day will build on work the artists have already done in terms of how Pooley has been supported in the past. The artists have developed a participation project based around 'pit props' and making pledges about the park. Pupils can also get crafty and make insect mobiles with the Wildlife Trust.
Pooley Country Park is a former colliery site and is now a 62.5 hectare park, a third of which is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, and contains several pools caused by mining subsidence, woodland habitats and is situated on the Coventry Canal.
