Councils challenge government in court on proposed High Speed Rail link.
THE 15 councils opposing the high speed rail link, HS2, will be in court on 3rd December where their judicial review of the Government's decision to press ahead with the £34billion project will be heard.
Councillor Martin Tett, Chairman of the 51m alliance and Leader of Buckinghamshire County Council said: "We are doing this with immense reluctance; however we feel that we have been left with no alternative. This immensely expensive project ignores the Davis Review of aviation policy, has an abysmal business case and represents extremely poor value for hard pressed taxpayers' money. Far better alternatives exist to build the infrastructure the country desperately needs more quickly and at far lower cost. We cannot let the DfT with its atrocious record on managing key investment decisions not answer for why these have been ignored."
Leader of North Warwickshire Borough Council, Councillor Mick Stanley, said: "The judicial review enables us to highlight the impact of this fundamentally flawed scheme, through the legal system. We remain strongly opposed to HS2 and have been disappointed by Government not listening to our concerns. If it goes ahead, this scheme will have a seriously detrimental effect on North Warwickshire , which could last for decades."
Ian Waddell, Chair of Middleton Action Group added: "Should this flawed and incredibly expensive project proceed, the impact on the people and environment of North Warwickshire will be as devastating as anywhere in the country. Not only do we have the huge 'Delta' junction at Water Orton involving massive concrete bridges over the motorways and within a stones throw of homes and a primary school, but we now learn that the proposed 'Y' junction branching off to Leeds is to be located just to the south of the M42 near to Curdworth"
"The Y junction (which will also be a huge multi-level interchange with no less than 6 rail tracks in several places) has been imposed upon our area with no opportunity given to local people to object, as it was not part of the public consultation which ended in July. This is undemocratic and typical of the high handed way in which the Government and HS2Ltd seem to be steamrollering this project through with no regard for the huge costs in relation to its marginal benefits, or for the outcomes of their own public consultation which overwhelmingly rejected the proposal".
The case is expection to last all this week. Question can be emailed to stevemaxey@northwarks.gov.uk or by telephone to:
