08 May 2013 15:06 Fight will go on to save ancient woodland - Queen's speech response
In response to The Queen's speech, Woodland Trust Chief Executive, Sue Holden, said:
"We note the inclusion of legislation to progress both phases of the HS2 project. HS2's credibility as a 'green' transport measure is seriously compromised by the fact that the preferred route from London to Manchester and Leeds will cause loss or damage to at least 67 irreplaceable ancient woods. We will continue to campaign to save these irreplaceable ancient woods, which make up one of our richest and most important natural habitats, for the communities that cherish them and for the wildlife that depends on them. We will also press for a comprehensive and proportionate environmental response to compensate for any ancient woodland lost as a result of the project for the local environment and communities."
