MALLORY Park racing circuit could be consigned to the history books as councillors prepare to rule on controversial plan tonight.
Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council are looking to enforce a ruling dating back to 1985 which restricts meetings to a total of 92 days per year after complaints over noise from nearby residents.
Mallory Park’s owners British Automobile Racing Club say that means the business will no longer be viable and will have to be sold, possibly for housing.
General manager John Ward said: “The council is deciding on the future of Mallory Park and if they agree to reduce the days to 92 then the circuit is finished and will shut down.
“The 145 jobs and £10 million plus benefit to the local economy will be lost, along with a historic motor racing circuit. The future of the circuit is now in the hands of the HBBC councillors.
“We need them to understand we are working to reduce noise and improve life for residents and are committed to being good neighbours.
“Shutting the circuit is not the right choice.
“We need as many supporters as possible to join us and make that point - Mallory Park is an important contributor and member of the local community.â€
Residents of nearby Kirkby Mallory say noise levels from the track have been intolerable and now the council is looking to take action to enforce the law, saying the track has hosted races on days when it was not legally allowed to, something Mallory Park officials denied.
More than 20,000 people have signed a petition save the circuit and now course bosses are urging race fans to show their support at the council chambers, on Rugby Road, Hinckley, from 6.30pm.
Ward added: “Mallory Park has already reduced its operations by shutting down motocross, stopping drifting and offering to change track day times and maximum number of vehicles on track.â€
