"The long awaited supermarket is due to open in Atherstone at the end of this month. The flagship shop is taking shape on the site of an old hatting factory, in Station Street. "We are very pleased to be finally opening a store in Atherstone, as we proudly consider Atherstone as our Home town in the UK," said Andy Gillies, logistics director. Mr Gillies, speaking from the company's Atherstone based head office, added:"We are Keen to celebrate the store opening and will be planning events to coincide with this." The new supermarket, which is due to open on Thursday June 29,will offer a wide selection from fresh grocery items to DIY products. Aldi's long term commitment to Atherstone is further demonstrated by the multi million pound extension to both the head office and warehouse facilities at holly lane. The multi purpose built corporate buying department, along with a new chilled and frozen food warehouse are well on schedule to be completed by March 2007 "Holly lane has proved a fantastic site since we opened here in May 1993.The further development of the site is a reflection of our continued success in the UK." Andy added."

" How is it flagship? it's a bog standard boring Aldi shop to the same design as all the non flagship ones
If your proud to be finally opening a store in the town, why not build something for us to be proud of. How you can be proud to consider somewhere your home and then build a 'cattleshed' as a suppermarket is beyond me.
I bet you are, you've got a cheap supermarket and now your trying to get us to be happy by telling us we should be celebrating. Of course it will, it will sell lots of things that local shops sell, local shops such as masters bakery.
This means we intend to get yet more out of atherstone and build yet more warehouse that actually employs very few people and is just storage. continued success because you walk all over local councils and build cheap buildings that don't fit in with where they're being built. "

Lets compare the two stores Aldi east side Co-Op East side Aldi Entrance Co-Op Entrance Aldi West Side Co-Op North Side Hardly what I'd call a flagship store or commitment and certainly nothing to be proud of. But then 'it's better than it was' Why do I keep hearing those words in Atherstone?

Derek Pickard blatantly saying that how great he thinks Aldi is, and so are many other atherstone online members. All in support of a national that will take trade away from independant shops, and has created a dangerous alley in the town. Double standards all round as these very people are against the new greggs because it is a national and will take trade away from a local retailer.

You are right, DP. As you know I have been 100% for the new Aldi outlet since it was first proposed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not a lot to say about it really is there? I think your photographs sum it up perfectly. It's just Aldi, cheap stuff for people who can't afford heinz baked beans. I'll never shop there, I wouldn't lower myself.
By the way, that link doesn't work tinfish.

Well, the car park is finished, the groundwork is done, the landscaping and trees are in. The windows are in, the lights and electrics are finished, the fridges and freezers are running. All thats left to go in are the tills, the shelves and the cheap food.

Took this today, got interogated by a manager, but he never said he I shouldn't be there, never mentioned trespass. He seemed very nice, even invited me on thursday. Looks very clean and tidy inside. If I go thursday, I'll take more picks and do a write up. For information, I've never actually been inside the aldi building, and no it's not a special camera, It's a phone camera, I'm just good at getting it to do what I want. Unfortunately it's only two megapixel, but on the plus side, it's always there when I want it, sometime a fuzzy photo is better than no photo.

I did have another picture to put on that I took today, but because the manager was reluctant for me to post it I didn't, I think he wants people to go tomorrow not knowing what's in store for them. I had quite a long chat with the manager, and he seems a great guy, perfect for Atherstone, if anyone can make that store work he can. Congratulations Aldi, you should be proud to have him working for you. He did a wonderfull job of explaining why the store was built that way, and explaining how great it is. I'm still not convinved that that building should have been built but, I am convinced that they've done the best with that building. Quite posh inside, very clean, good range of products, plenty choice for Atherstone, nice carpark, 79 spaces , well laid out, landscaped, trees, wall, railings.
