You're welcome here but it is very quiet. I can understand why wil closed it. Facebook seems to have taken most people. Will did have the advantage of being a county wide site though and this is just northern Warwickshire. Advantage of this of course are that there are very few running costs compared to WOL.
Maybe one day his interest will be rekindled and he'll re start it and instead of working against each other we'll join forces.

Hello Lizadaw, welcome . I was mari on wol.
I am new to the forum too, It all seems a bit dark in here at the mo.
Madhatter, did you mean that WOL also was on facebook?

As far as I know WOL never had a facebook page. We have a facebook page. it started out as a forum page but changed to an events page as that's what people seem to want. They want a town page where they can share photographs and find out whats on . They aren't interested in debates.

Feel free to drop by and re join Yes that's fine, I don't mind visiting here, but there doesn't seem to be much interaction, although I have looked in from time to time in the past to read newsy stuff. I think you were a member on WOL for a while as well, which sadly was left to only about 4 regular members until it closed down. It is missed. I think Will is too busy with his other forums, plus work committments. Life can get a bit hectic at times, I guess.

There's never really been any regular visitors to interact with. Bosco and gawd i cant even remember his name, don't come here any more so i mostly stick to posting news, events and the occasional whinge about the council

Hello Lizadaw, welcome . I was mari on wol. I am new to the forum too, It all seems a bit dark in here at the mo. Ifeel in the dark too. For a few weeks I floundered , missing my routine of Wol and the friends of course, My computer had no personality for a while. I still write and hope one day to get publisheD. I knew Atherstone like the back of my hand once. 5 years I lived there-schooldays- war years. and hAve many happy memoriesMy profile tell me I'm 56 -haha-- so I'll stick to that I think. I wonder how many Atherstone people are on Atherstone O L I may know a few. Madhatter, did you mean that WOL also was on facebook?

I think I put a BIT OF INFO IN THE WRONG BOX. but think I've sussed out how to answer now. hOWEVER NICE TO MEET MONOLYTH alias marie AGAIN, FROM WOL. hOPE THIS site FARES BETTER. I DONT USE FACEBOOK, SO AM MISSING OUT. I WAS LOST WHEN WOL CLOSED- 6 YEARS IS A LONG TIME. AS I SAID MY COMPUTER , STANDING THERE IN THE CORNER, HAD PERSONALITY THEN, I KNEW YOU WERE ALL THERE EVERY DAY I knew atherstone well in my childhood--war years-schooldays 'til I went home again. It was a bit of a dead end town then, but I was happy and always up to something although even then I realised there was nothing for me there if I'd stayed. i WAS AN EVACUEE AND WENT THROUGH 3 SETS FOSTER PARENTS 'TIL i FOUND THE 4TH AND PERFECT ONE WHO UNDERSTOOD ME.. I wanted more than a Hat factory job, shopgirl if I was lucky , farmworker--how exciting a future, AND JUST AFTER I LEFT A SHOE FACTORY OPENED. THE MOST EXCITING THING THAT HAPPENED FOR YEARS. I'm sure it's changed for the better now-well I hope it has. I go occasionally to get a feel of it, and I love the old buildings which I still remember..I belong to the history group and my sister and I conrtibuted to the Yards project. (My only claim to fame -to be on disc for posterity. Iwas sad when the booktown venture closed, they were wonderful places, almost as good as Hay-on Wye.

We had new industry but most of the manufacturing has gone now. The yards have returned The booktown project never ended, it just faded away, as it never began, it was supposed to in a blaze of publicity but was a damp squib, it actually rose from the ashes of that and grew, complete opposite to the others that mostly failed. Atherstone only failed because the people retired or got ill, not because the business failed. I still believe that Atherstone is an excellent place to open a business and there's actually very few shop available. The St Giles book shop is still going strong. Its a true compliment to be told that it was nearly as good as hay, and backs up the above opinions . Ironically The guy who set it up has been exposed as a child molester at the same time as all the controversy over Saville and co in England.
I don't know what happened to the history section on here , I cant see it. Will have to try to sort that out.
I do wish people would post more on here, anything because I've recently been told that the forum is dead, no more, and that they've set a new Atherstone site up, despite my plans to set one up. It wont succeed, they'll get bored and it will go into a state of dereliction an not be up to date. I find it annoying that someone has yet again taken my idea and instead of working with me, they turn it into their idea and work against me. I was once told that I would get bored of this forum, but unlike others that do it to make money or promote their business I do it for me, because it makes me feel good, Its no work because its a subject that interests me, on a format that is at the moment free. If i started a web site it would cost money and that was why i asked for donations. But at the moment its free and im still interested. 6 years on

hallo Madhatter, Iremember you.The other sites faded and so will the new opposing one. People are apathetic and prefer facebook. I dont use it.Even the history group is a bit thin on the ground, with a very dedicated few. I was told by 2 of the closed bookshop owners that the older indiginants and shopkeepers of Atherstone were so insular -thats why they took the hint and closed. Many of their customers came from out of town. Maybe if people read more controversial stuff they may move themselves to put finger to keyboard and discuss. by the way -what happened to The Atherstone News--the once local paper?

What are the old factory buildings behind the pub in the market place. You can also see them from the entries behind the shops opposite the co-op in Long St. I took some wonderful photos of them.

Thanks Lizadaw, it is nice to meet up again. I'll have to get Madhatter to change my name to something easier , ' I only thought of monosynth on the spur of the moment when I first joined' but perhaps I'll changed it to Marie . If thats ok with Madhatter. I found Rebbonk on the Coventry Message Board, if its ok to mention here. icserver.no-ip.biz/coventry/viewforum.php?f=29Perhaps he will join.
